“You can’t pour from an empty cup”
This’s one of those quotes you see having a fancy Instagram design or a dreamy Pinterest graphic and think to yourself “oh yeeaah, that’s probably right”
But the more I think about it, the stronger my conviction that that’s complete bullshit!
Sometimes, our cups get empty. In an inevitable cycle of life; There are times when we get drained, empty, tired, sad, withdrawn, moody. But we still function.
I think quotes like “You can’t pour from an empty cup” tells us, on a subconscious level, that we’re not allowed to have empty cups and that it’s our life’s mission to pour from our cup to others
Get my idea now? It’s not that I’m selfish (well, actually I am, on a decent level) but I believe we should do “our thing” more than pour into some else’s cup as a mandatory state of being and doing.
See, when you do “your own thing”, the magic starts to happen
Being driven and highly focused on your own cup of Joe actually determined changes in the humans around you. It makes them more supportive of you, it encourages and motivates them to become better themselves.
All while not focusing on taking care of someone else’s cup, but your own.
